Balgonie Castle

In Fife, Scotland, 3.5 kilometers east of Glenrothes, near Milton of Balgonie, on the south bank of the River Leven, stands a castle dating from the 14th century. This fortification, now popular as a venue for weddings, is the Balgonie Castle. The lands around the castle belonged to the Sibbald family since at least 1246. In the 1360s they built a barmkin, meaning a fortified courtyard, with a tower house placed at the north-west corner. After a succession of owners who added to and modified parts of it, Balgonie Castle is now the property of Raymond Morris, laird of Balgonie. Many well-known personages have visited [...]

Ballindalloch Castle

Right in the middle of Speyside, Scotland, surrounded by hills and close to the well-known whiskey distilleries of Cragganmore, Glenlivet, Glenfarclas and Glenfiddich, Ballindalloch Castle is the private home of the Macpherson-Grant family since 1546. Quite a few spirits of the other worldly kind are also found here. This castle is known as the Pearl of the North. It is set in the magnificent Spey Valley in the Highlands of Scotland, between Dufftown and Grantown-on-Spey, in the Moray region of Scotland, with the Rivers Spey and Avon (pronounced “Ann”) flowing in rumbles and tumbles through the grounds. The original architecture was based on the traditional [...]

Blackness Castle

Built on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, not far from the village of Blackness in Stirlingshire, Scotland, Blackness Castle squats on the Black Rock jutting out northwards into the murky waters of the passing river. Its elongated shape and unique placement gave it the name “the ship that never sailed”. The smaller North Tower is called the Stem Tower. The bigger South Tower is called the Stern Tower. The Central Tower, the biggest of the three, stands up like a main mast. Work on the castle was begun in the 1440s by Sir George Crichton, Lord High Admiral of Scotland, a member [...]

Glamis Castle

Glamis (pronounced with a silent “i”) Castle is located, coordinate-wise, at 56.62030 North and 3.00240 West. That puts it near the village of Glamis, five miles west of Forfar, in Angus, Scotland. The tourist attraction is the home of the Earl and Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne. It is also the childhood home of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon who is better known as the Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, the widow of King George VI. This castle is depicted on the reverse side of ten pound notes issued by the Royal Bank of Scotland. The estate surrounding the castle covers more than 14,000 acres. Two streams, one [...]

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is to Scotland what the Tower of London is to England. Way back in 600 AD, it started as a small hill fort called “Din Eidyn” meaning “the fort on the rock”. Sitting right on top of the long-extinct volcanic Castle Rock, it is a must-see destination for about one million visitors every year. Besides the attractions of its breath-taking panoramic views of the surrounding beautiful landscape and the big collection of historical artifacts in its museum, Edinburgh Castle is also the haunting grounds of a host of spooks and specters. The dungeons beneath the castle provided a fertile source of supernatural phenomena. [...]
